NIKE BLAZER HI QS ‘FLORAL PACK’: HOMEGROWN FOOTWEAR

Categories trainers

Right now it’s all floral everything. The kind of patterns we’d get slaughtered for wearing a while back are killing it as all over prints — after all, Nike aren’t strangers to this stuff. Back in the early 1980s we saw different colours of the Aloha shoe for the Hawaii Marathon (which had a co-sign from the Beach Boys’ Mike Love) and recently that fanciness was transferred onto some excellent Cortez makeups. Blazer overkill put the shoe into a comatose state recently, but when this model is done right, we’re fully down and this Quickstrike floral trio is superbly executed. Representing for NYC, LA and the Chi (we initially thought that represented China for some reason), the canvas-style uppers are perfect to get very, very graphic during the design process. The birds of paradise on the LA version keep it sunny, chrysanthemums are apparently Chicago’s national flower and the dandelion print on the NYCs is a nod to the city’s high speed pace. Or that could all be a convenient piece of storytelling because we’re not green fingered enough to know if it’s all true or not, but those with long memories will recall our former creative director C-Law chatting to Alan Titchmarsh on BBC 1 a decade ago and getting him to say “Bathing Ape Bapestas” so we feel a certain tenuous horticultural connection. This is a little more well executed than just hurling petals onto a classic silhouette, or another confusing city collection, and all three Nike Blazers will be in the store tomorrow…
